Hot Take: Carmy was content with his situationship with Claire.
I firmly believe that he was fine with their casual fun and didn’t want anything more with her. She’s pretty, non-confrontational, quiet, and unchallenging. There is no chase or intensity or need to try and impress her. It’s a simple engagement of sex, company, and someone to listen to his problems without opposition or any substantial input.
They start sleeping together after 2x05 and by 2x10, marks about two months of presumed quality time. So much so that Carmy’s business partners couldn’t get ahold of him, nor could anyone else. For the “what are we?” or “where is this going?” conversation to not come up even once is telling. As we all know, Carmy adamantly states that Claire is not his girlfriend multiple times, particularly to Sydney (which is also something of serious note). So what had he been doing with her for two months? Essentially he’s just been wasting time—his own and hers. After he makes Claire his girlfriend in 2x08, they sleep together as always but Carmy pulls away emotionally and physically—only to drift closer to Sydney in 2x09. I would go as far to say he’s having an emotional affair with her.
In conclusion, Carmy likes Claire but he’s not in love with her, and never has been. He was never going to take her seriously, go out of his way to woo her, or take her on dates. Because he never had to. Men know which woman in their life to take seriously and which one serves a certain purpose. Claire ended her relationship with him the same way it started: with a barrier between her and the man she never really knew. They’re definitely getting back together next season but I think they’ll break up for good by 3x09, then we’ll get Sydcarmy’s Big Fight in 3x10.
Side note: anyone notice most of the other men in Carmy’s life (Mikey, Richie, Steven, Fak) call her ‘Claire Bear’, but Carm never does? Hang it up, girl.
